2015 Texas Recreation & Park Society Statewide Park Design Excellence Award
A dog park underneath two major highways provides social amenity for citizens and man’s best friend.

It seems an unlikely space for a dog park, at the intersection of President George Bush Turnpike and U.S. Highway 75. However, alongside TxDOT and the City of Richardson, Pacheco Koch was able to help the community take advantage of what it had to work with. Several scenarios were taken into consideration such as an additional paddock permitting rotation of open areas ensuring optimal turf recovery in the closed area, an area for elderly and less active dogs, and a special rental paddock for training classes, demonstrations and parties to help with costs to maintain the park. Other special considerations included a special shadow inventory and analysis to determine sun exposure as a result of being located beneath the freeway overpasses. The results helped to determine where different program elements would be best located and where certain grass types and aggregates would be used based on sunlight requirements. While most dog parks cater strictly to their main clientele, taking their owners into consideration, signage, a pet wash station, site furniture, a custom kiosk and custom designed dog play features helped unify the design and complete the park experience. At a larger scale the park required team collaboration including lighting, parking, drainage, and coordination with TxDOT and Oncor. This project, now known as Bush Central Barkway, is a great example of how Pacheco Koch prefers to work, as a team with all of the necessary resources under the same roof to best serve our clients. As a result this park won the State Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) Excellence in Design award as well as the 2017 Texas ASLA Merit Award.
