Improvements to a city street provides better driving conditions and a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
As the City of Crowley began to consider future the needs of the city, they wanted to create a sense of place through a well-planned and well-managed Main Street; a place that provided opportunities for the residents and businesses alike. Pacheco Koch, as the current civil engineering, land surveying, and landscape architecture firm, provided two roundabout designs and a streetscape vision for a new look to the existing street. The project is proposed to be completed in two phases. The first phase consists of reconstruction of the existing two-lane road with a continuous left-turn lane with drainage ditches from FM 731 west to Magnolia Street. The proposed roadway will be a curb-and-gutter roadway with inlets and underground drainage systems. The continuous left-turn lane will be removed to add front-in and parallel street parking and bike lanes to both sides of the road, plus a wider, more pedestrian-friendly sidewalk will be designed. A roundabout will also be designed at the intersection of Main Street and Hampton Road. The second phase is from Magnolia Street to Beverly Street. This phase also has an existing two-lane road with drainage ditches, which will be replaced with a curb and gutter roadway with inlets and underground drainage systems. Parallel-only street parking will be added to both sides of the road, due to the limited right-of-way width. Just as it was designed in the first phase, bike lanes and wider sidewalks were added for pedestrians.
